Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Description
Experienced Program Leadership | Strong Clinical Support | Outstanding Quality of Life
Pediatric Search Partners is engaged to conduct a national search for physicians who are fellowship-trained in Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation to join the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine as full-time faculty practicing at CHRISTUS Children’s in vibrant San Antonio, Texas. CHRISTUS Children’s is San Antonio’s first and only freestanding, academic, not-for-profit children’s hospital.
For a pediatric physiatrist seeking to work alongside a highly experienced pediatric physiatrist and program leader who can provide mentorship and clinical guidance as well as an established nurse practitioner, experienced inpatient and outpatient pediatric therapists, and supportive pediatric colleagues, this offers an exceptional opportunity to join a practice with a strong foundation while helping shape the continued growth of pediatric rehabilitation services.
This is part of a broader institutional commitment by CHRISTUS Children’s and Baylor College of Medicine to grow neurosciences and develop a Neuroscience Center of Excellence. This plan includes the further development of pediatric physiatry services to expand access to comprehensive rehabilitation care for underserved children and adolescents throughout San Antonio, South Texas, and the surrounding region.
Physicians interested in clinical research will have access to the Max and Minnie Tomerlin Voelcker Clinical Research Center, which supports more than 200 active research studies backed by $5.3 million in state, federal, and foundation grants.
This opportunity offers a combination that is especially meaningful in pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation:
- An 8-bed acute pediatric and adolescent inpatient rehabilitation program with private rooms, contiguous therapy gym, private therapy treatment room spaces, child life, and pet therapy support
- Up-to-date rehabilitation technology
- Strong interdisciplinary environment and collegial colleagues who support PM&R services
- Shared coverage of the inpatient rehabilitation unit with hospital medicine
- The opportunity to help develop a Neuroscience Center of Excellence and expand both inpatient and outpatient services
- Expanding pediatric subspecialty services, including satellite clinic locations and rehabilitation centers
- Academic appointment through Baylor College of Medicine with teaching, research, and leadership opportunities
- Pediatric residency program and the future potential for pediatric PM&R resident elective rotations
- Unique community programs and facilities for children and adults with disabilities
Program Overview
The pediatric physiatry program provides comprehensive care for children and adolescents with congenital and acquired neuromuscular, neurological, and orthopedic conditions. Clinical care includes hypertonia management, orthotic prescription, therapy recommendations, and durable medical equipment evaluation and prescription, with an emphasis on thoughtful, coordinated, high-quality care.
Clinical responsibilities include shared coverage of the inpatient rehabilitation program and inpatient PM&R consult service, outpatient physiatry clinic, and participation in multidisciplinary clinics. Physicians will work closely with hospital medicine, pediatric subspecialists, rehabilitation therapists, nursing, child life, and community partners supporting children and adults with disabilities.
The incoming physician will have global opportunities to help develop comprehensive injection therapy and intrathecal baclofen pump management services, expand pediatric EMG and nerve conduction capabilities, and develop other clinical programs based on physician interest and community need. Additional growth is occurring through satellite clinic locations, rehabilitation centers, and other expanding pediatric specialty services across the region.
Faculty may participate in clinical research and will have opportunities to teach and mentor pediatric residents and other learners through Baylor College of Medicine and CHRISTUS Children’s. The program also anticipates future opportunities for pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation resident elective rotations.
The Physician Who Will Thrive Here
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative, clinically engaged pediatric physiatrist with broad clinical knowledge, a commitment to interdisciplinary care, and an interest in program development. This is an especially attractive opportunity for a physician who values the guidance and partnership of an experienced leader while also wanting the ability to contribute ideas and help shape future growth.
Most importantly, the program is seeking a physician who will enjoy caring for children and families as part of a collegial, mission-driven team and who is excited by the opportunity to expand access to an essential pediatric specialty in a large and growing region.
Compensation & Institutional Support
The positions include academic appointments through Baylor College of Medicine. Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor will be determined by each candidate’s credentials and experience.
These positions are employed by Baylor College of Medicine and offer a highly competitive salary, excellent benefits, relocation support, and strong institutional resources.
