About Valley Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center

Over seven decades ago, five young mothers imagined building a hospital just for kids in California’s Central Valley.  The mothers’ dream not only expanded into a 358-bed free-standing children’s hospital with nationally recognized physicians and programs, but it is also now an entire healthcare network that serves more than 1.3 million children in the heart of California.

Valley Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, including an outpatient unit and 36-bed inpatient unit, provides the breadth of specialized services and depth of experience to treat the most common to the rarest pediatric hematologic and oncologic conditions.  With state-of-the-art treatment protocols and clinical trials, the team saw more than 180 newly diagnosed oncology cases with 13,923 patient visits (7,946 oncology and 5,977 hematology) and 4,020 unique patients (1,453 oncology and 2,587 hematology) in the 2022 fiscal year. Because of the growth in both hematology and oncology, the Cancer and Blood Disorders Center is now staffed with five nurse practitioners and twelve board-certified pediatric hematologists and oncologists who have been trained at top institutions around the world.

Valley Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center ranks in the 95th percentile for the number of patients enrolled in Children’s Oncology Group clinical trials  and is one of only 141 federally funded hemophilia treatment centers in the country. Through enhanced therapies and supportive care, Valley Children’s cancer patient cure rates average 85%.

Valley Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Center incorporates comprehensive programs in Leukemia/Lymphoma, Solid Tumors, Neuro-Oncology, Histiocytic Disorders and Childhood Cancer Survivorship. In 2022, Valley Children's was one of the top enrolling sites for the Centers for Disease Control and Preservation Community Counts Hemophilia Project in the Western States, Region IX with 179 participants for the performance period ending in September 2022. Valley Children’s has also received membership by invitation to the Pacific Sickle Cell Research Consortium and the American Society of Hematology Research Collaborative.
